China’s Sinovel has won a tender from the Shanghai municipal government to supply 17 of its largest capacity wind turbines to an offshore demonstration project in Shanghai port. This will be the first wind farm in Asia to use 6-megawatt offshore turbines.
Huaneng Renewables will build the 102-megawatt project. Sinovel plans to construct an offshore production base in the Shanghai port industrial zone to make transport to the project site easier.
Sinovel unveiled its 6-megawatt turbines last year. Blade diameter measures 128 meters. Delivery of the turbines has not yet been scheduled.
Shanghai plans to invest up to US$1.6 billion in onshore and offshore wind farms by 2015, the government said in a statement to reporters.
