Multipurpose Rates Continue Recovery


(Global) Toepfer Index Edges Upward



Charter rates for multipurpose vessels continued their recovery this month, marking the third month in a row of increase, according to the latest data from shipping consultancy Toepfer Transport.

​The firm reports that time charter rates edged up to US$6,545 in September, a slight improvement on US$6,492 last month. Rates have been trending upwards since a low of US$6,381 in June, but still remain some way below the yearly high of US$7,578 in November 2019.

Data was published as part of the firm’s Multipurpose Shipping Report, a monthly index which is based on a 12,500 deadweight-tonne multipurpose /heavy-lift F-Type vessel for a six to 12-month charter period.

Headquartered in Hamburg, Germany, Toepfer Transport is one of the largest S&P brokers in the city and its research department has a particular focus on the MPV/ heavy-lift market.
