Authorities in Afghanistan have sent the first export shipment to India via Iran's Chabahar Port.

The newly revitalized breakbulk hub at Chabahar has been the focus of major investment from Mumbai and Tehran as they seek to create a rival to China’s involvement in Pakistan’s nearby Gwadar port. The recent shipment from Afghanistan comprised 570 tonnes carried in 23 vehicles.

“Chabahar Port is the result of healthy cooperation between India, Iran and Afghanistan; this will ensure economic growth," Afghan President Ashraf Ghani said.

At the start of the year, the India government took over the operation of the terminal area, cargo handling equipment and office building at Shahid Beheshti Port, Chabahar.
