Bulgaria Approves Sofia Airport Project

(Europe) Concessionaire Agreement Signed

Authorities in Bulgaria have approved plans for the new Sofia Airport, promising new capacity for breakbulk transport in the region.

The Bulgarian Ministry of Transport and the SOF Connect consortium signed a concessionaire agreement for the airport, framing a 35-year public-private partnership designed to boost Bulgaria’s economic rebound post Covid-19.

Consortium partners The Meridiam, Strabag and Munich Airport are working closely to advance construction with major breakbulk activity expected as the project develops. The partners plan to develop comprehensive sustainable infrastructure to serve as a reference location for flights across Europe, Middle East and Transcaucasia.

EPC work will be handled by Austrian construction company Strabag with Munich Airport providing knowledge, expertise and market outreach.
