Jumbo Tackles Angolan EPIC Contracts

(Africa) Use of Augmented Reality

Breakbulk shipping line Jumbo has commenced two major heavy-lift projects in Angola for energy firm Total, as part of an engineering, procurement, installation and commission, or EPIC, project.

The complex CLOV MPP and Zinia Phase campaigns both involve shipments from Northern Europe utilizing H800 Class vessels.

“Combining the multiple characteristics of shallow draft, global coverage, extensive lifting and loading capacity, Jumbo is mobilizing the Fairlane and the Jumbo Vision to complete the contracts,” a spokesperson for the firm said.

Complex analysis

The Zinia Phase 2 project commenced in October and involves transport of 10 loaded flexible reels from Denmark to Luanda, weighing in at 2,080 tonnes. Once in Angola, the cargo will be supplied to the Seven Arctic as it carries out its EPIC campaign 150 kilometers off the coast of Angola.

The CLOV MPP assignment involved transport of an empty 24-metre diameter carousel and a "substantial" length of subsea umbilical from Norway to Angola. The load also comprised numerous auxiliary equipment and required comprehensive Finite Element Method (FEM) analysis and a shim plan to spread the load of the carousel evenly.

“Shimming is accomplished by levelling up sections of the deck with steel plates of varying thicknesses, thus preventing any deflections during transport,” a Jumbo spokesperson explained.

HOLO Lens

As the shim plan required the precise positioning of 156 different points on the deck, Jumbo turned to new technology to ease the process, deploying its augmented reality (AR) HOLO lens for the first time. This system uses software and AR glasses to locate predetermined positions with pinpoint precision, providing greater accuracy and speed.

“This is a system that we have been developing and testing for some time – and we are proud to say that this is the first time we have use it for a client,” says Jumbo Project Manager Tijmen Bregt.

Based in Schiedam in the Netherlands, Jumbo provides heavy-lift and project cargo services worldwide and operates  a fleet of heavy-lift vessels with lifting capacity from 500 tonnes up to 3,000 tonnes. The firm is an exhibitor at Breakbulk events.
