Proposed Site in New York State Would Make Offshore Wind Nacelles
Siemens Gamesa is planning to build a US$500 million production facility for offshore wind nacelles in New York state, provided the company’s turbines are selected by local authorities in an upcoming tender, it said.
The proposed plant would be located at the Port of Coeymans, a deepwater marine terminal about 100 miles north of New York City, and would supply components for all Siemens Gamesa offshore wind power projects along the US East Coast.
A number of supplier facilities for steel component fabrication, bearings and composite components are also planned, the wind turbine maker said.
“The announcement of this proposed facility in New York is a major step forward in our desire to lead the massive US offshore wind market,” said Marc Becker, CEO of Siemens Gamesa’s offshore business.
New York’s third competitive offshore wind solicitation, announced last July, is seeking to procure between 2 GW and 4.7 GW of offshore capacity. The state is targeting at least 9 GW of offshore wind power by 2035.
The awards are expected to be announced in the first half of this year.
Siemens Gamesa, part of Siemens Energy, is also planning to build an offshore wind turbine blade finishing facility at Portsmouth, Virginia, adding to the two production sites its already has in the US.
Siemens Gamesa is a member of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network.
