Antwerp-Bruges Unveils World's First Hydrogen-Powered Tugboat

“Hydrotug 1” Ready to Begin Operations in Antwerp Port Area

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges in Belgium and cleantech shipping company CMB Tech have unveiled the world’s first hydrogen-powered tugboat, a breakthrough for Europe’s maritime sector as it inches towards zero-carbon shipping.

The 30-meter-long vessel, dubbed Hydrotug 1, is powered by two BeHydro V12 dual-fuel medium speed engines – each providing 2 megawatts – with the latest EU Stage V emissions aftertreatment and can run on both hydrogen and traditional fuel.

The tug can store up to 415 kilos of compressed hydrogen in 6 stillages installed on deck and will cut traditional fuel consumption and associated emissions by 65 percent. The vessel, which boasts a 65-ton bollard pull, is now ready to begin operations in the Antwerp port area, the partners said in a joint statement.

“Hydrogen is one of the keys to an economy and society with minimal climate impact. As such, it is one of the raw materials, energy sources and fuels of the future,” said Jacques Vandermeiren, CEO of the Port of Antwerp-Bruges.

“Port of Antwerp-Bruges wants to fully exploit its potential and is committed to being an active pioneer in the hydrogen economy on a European scale. With the Hydrotug 1, the world's first hydrogen-powered tugboat, we want to be a source of inspiration as well as an example for other ports.”

The Port of Antwerp-Bruges aims to “green” its fleet and become carbon neutral by 2050.
