German LNG Terminal Selects EPC JV

Energy developer German LNG Terminal has selected a consortium of Spanish and German engineering specialists to complete breakbulk transport and construction for a new terminal in the north of Germany.

The joint venture, consisting of Spanish firms COBRA Instalaciones y Servicios and Sener Ingeniería y Sistemas along with TGE Gas Engineering from Germany, was selected for the engineering, procurement and construction contract.

“This final phase will consist of a comprehensive value-improvement exercise and a detailed price actualization to make the project more cost efficient and aims at concluding a binding EPC contract by the end of 2020,” a spokesperson for German LNG Terminal said.


Permit Applications Progress

The developer expects that detailed design and engineering work will be started soon after the finalization of the contract, paving the way for extensive breakbulk transport to and from the proposed site of the LNG terminal, in Brunsbuettel, Northern Germany.

“The selection of a potential partner for the final development of the EPC contract is a further milestone for the project. At the same time, German LNG Terminal is in the process of completing the permit application for the planning of the port infrastructure, including the waterside facilities,” management said.

The partners were selected for their previous experience designing LNG terminals in Sines, Portugal; Sagunto and Bahía Bizcaya, Spain; Gate in The Netherlands;  Dunkerque in France; and Zeebrugge, Belgium.


Subcontract Phase

Once complete, the terminal is forecast to provide the largest import capacity for LNG in Germany, driving uptake of the fuel across the region and lowering the environmental impact of both shipping and heavy-duty road transport.

Current plans call for a jetty with two berths, catering for LNG carriers of up to 265,000 cubic-meter capacity, and distribution facilities with total capacity of up to 8 billion cubic meters per annum.

German LNG Terminal is a joint venture between Dutch natural gas firm Gasunie, infrastructure specialist Oiltanking and multinational chemicals firm Vopak.
