32.5 Million Tons Through October
The Georgia Ports Authority reported record total tonnage crossing its terminals in the first 10 months of 2019.
Total tonnage reached 32.5 million tons through October, up 4 percent over 2018, across breakbulk, bulk and containerized cargo. The first phase of GPA's Mason Mega Rail project led to an increase in intermodal volumes by 30 percent, compared to the same period in 2017.
"Exciting new business opportunities such as the export of the Georgia-made Kia Telluride, and resins produced in Pennsylvania and the Gulf States, as well as the import of cold-treated fresh produce, are driving the increase in trade through our deepwater ports," said Will McKnight, GPA board chairman.
The GPA operates Georgia’s primary deepwater ports of Savannah and Brunswick, as well as inland barge operations in Bainbridge and Columbus.
