(Americas) New CPET Training Program Launched
Renewed investment in training is needed to ensure that the U.S. Gulf Coast petrochemical industry can meet future workforce requirements, according to Texan institution San Jacinto College.
The college is the site of a new US$60-million training facility, part-funded by petrochemical firms in the region. The new LyondellBasell Center for Petrochemical, Energy & Technology (CPET) features an 8,000-square-feet glycol distillation unit, instrumentation labs, analyzers, digital control systems, process labs, pump trainer, valve testers, as well as electrical and controller labs.
“In the Gulf Coast area there are a lot new facilities being built and a lot of people retiring … Students weren´t necessarily graduating with the skills sets that companies needed, didn´t have as much hands-on experience, so companies like Ineos, LyondellBasell and Shell got involved,” explained Clarissa Belbas, director of resources for San Jacinto’s CPET program.
CPET offers associate degrees in process technology, instrumentation, electrical technology, non-destructive testing, and environment health and safety.
