“K” Line Takes Delivery of LNG-Fueled Car Carrier

7,000-Car Capacity Vessel Also Equipped With Exhaust Gas Recirculation System

Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (“K” Line) has taken delivery of a new next-generation, liquified natural gas (LNG)-fueled car carrier, another step for the Japanese shipping company in its bid to transition toward greener shipping solutions.

The 200-meter-long vessel, named Poseidon Highway, was built at Imabari Shipbuilding’s Marugame facilities in Japan, and has a capacity to carry up to 7,000 vehicles.

The vessel is equipped with a MAN Energy Solutions’ dual-fuel electronic control engine and boasts exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) technology that is expected to cut nitrogen oxide (NOx) emissions by 80-90%. The ship is also the “K” Line’s first to be awarded a ClassNK electric vehicle (EV) fire-fighting notation.

“Including this Vessel, five car carriers operated by “K” Line have acquired notations,” the company said in a statement.

In a bid to decarbonize its operations, “K” Line’s “Environmental Vision 2050: Blue Seas for the Future” project is targeting an improvement in carbon emissions efficiency by 50% by the end of the decade.

The initiative calls for the introduction of zero-emission fuels such as ammonia and hydrogen and carbon-neutral fuels such as bio-LNG and synthetic fuels.

K-Line is an exhibitor at Breakbulk Europe.
