Qatar to Become World’s Largest Urea Exporter, Company Says
QatarEnergy is planning to build a new world-scale urea production complex that will help transform the Middle East nation into the world’s largest urea exporter, the state-run company said.
The project calls for the installation of three ammonia production lines to supply feedstock for four urea plants in Mesaieed Industrial City and would more than double Qatar’s production of urea – a key nitrogen fertilizer – from 6 million to 12.4 million tons per year.
The first urea train is slated to come online before the end of the decade, the company said.
“Developing this project in Mesaieed Industrial City will ensure the optimum utilization of the excellent existing infrastructure for the petrochemical and fertilizer industries, including the city’s export port, which is one of the largest fertilizer and petrochemical export facilities in the MENA region. It will also establish Mesaieed as the urea production capital of the world,” said Saad Sherida Al-Kaabi, president and CEO of QatarEnergy.
QatarEnergy has also announced it would build a new solar power mega project that will more than double Qatar’s solar energy capacity to about 4,000 megawatts (MW). The facility – one of the world’s largest, QatarEnergy said – would be installed in the city of Dukhan.
Qatar’s solar power portfolio includes the 800-MW Al-Kharsaah facility, which was inaugurated in 2022, and two soon-to-be-launched solar power projects that QatarEnergy is building at Ras Laffan and Mesaieed with a combined production capacity of 875 MW.
Breakbulk Middle East 2025 is on 10-11 February at the Dubai World Trade Center.
