Heavy-Lift Vessel RollBarge 1 Deployed for Loading, Offloading Operations

Roll Group has teamed up with McDermott to transport industrial units from Thailand to Viva Energy’s ultra-low sulfur gasoline (ULSG) project at the Geelong Refinery in southeast Australia.
The shipment included six pre-assembled unit (PAU) modules and two pipe rack modules weighing up to 1,000 freight tons apiece. The units were transported from CB&I’s fabrication facility in Sattahip, Thailand, to the refinery complex in Victoria.
In Thailand, the modules were loaded onto RollBarge 1, a specialized heavy-lift barge designed for float-in and float-out operations within RollDock vessels. After arriving in Australia, the units were floated out on the barge and unloaded using an innovative grounding method at a newly built material off-loading facility.
“This approach eliminated the need for extensive dredging and construction of a large jetty, as well as the associated environmental approval process in Australia,” Roll Group said. “By delivering an innovative and environmentally conscious solution, Roll Group/McDermott demonstrated its expertise and ability to overcome complex logistical challenges.”
Roll Group is an exhibitor and sponsor at Breakbulk Middle East 2025. McDermott and CB&I are members of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network.
