A sharp increase in the number of people diagnosed with coronavirus in China has fueled fears that the outbreak is far from over.
The number of deaths recorded in the Chinese province of Hubei hit 242 on Wednesday with 14,840 people diagnosed with the virus.
The spike in cases is partially attributable to a change in the way Chinese authorities identify the disease, with a switch from RNA, or ribonucleic acid, testing to use of computerised tomography (CT) scans. RNA tests typically take several days to complete whereas CT scans are more or less instant, leading to a rapid increase in the number of cases identified
Experts have noted that the infection period means that many of the new deaths are resulting from cases previously diagnosed that are now nearing end of life.
