ABB Wins Work for Danish Green Hydrogen Project

Swiss Group to Provide Electrical Engineering Expertise for H2 Energy Esbjerg

Swiss engineering group ABB has been contracted to provide basic electrical engineering support for the H2 Energy Esbjerg hydrogen production facility in Denmark, one of Europe’s largest hydrogen developments.

ABB’s support will be deployed for the plant’s power distribution, from grid point of connection to electrolyzers, and for other process equipment at the 1-GW plant in Esbjerg as well as a hydrogen distribution hub at Fredericia.

The project, booked into this year’s third quarter, will allow ABB to build on its expertise in the Power-to-X sector (PtX) for the development of green hydrogen, which already includes collaborations in Sweden, Norway, and elsewhere in Denmark.

“ABB is focused on supporting the EU’s priority to develop renewable hydrogen,” said Per-Erik Holsten, head of Northern Europe at ABB Energy Industries. “We are increasingly active in the pioneering Power-to-X market which is essential in meeting global energy transition goals and achieving a low carbon society in the future.”

The Esbjerg facility, slated to come online by 2027, will convert renewable electricity from offshore wind to produce 90,000 tons of green hydrogen per year, supporting the decarbonization of heavy industry and road transportation. The hydrogen could also be used to produce e-fuels such as methanol and ammonia, ABB said.

Zurich-headquartered ABB’s announcement of the Esbjerg contract coincided with the release of its third-quarter earnings, which showed revenues rising by 11 percent year-on-year to just under US$8 billion.

Operational earnings before interest, taxes, depreciation, and amortization in the three months to September grew 13 percent to US$1.4 billion, with a net income of US$882 million.

“Q3 2023 was a strong quarter for ABB including a positive book-to-bill ratio, operational EBITA margin again above 17 percent and a strong cash flow delivery putting us in a good position to achieve an annual free cash flow of about US$3 billion,” said CEO Bjorn Rosengren.

ABB is a member of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network, an extensive networking platform for executives operating at the top end of the project supply chain in sectors such as oil & gas, power, mining and minerals, construction, forestry, industrial manufacturing, and aerospace.

The next in-person meet-up for BGSN members will be at Breakbulk Middle East 2024, taking place on February 12-13 at the Dubai World Trade Center.
