Abu Dhabi Company Is Expanding Fleet To Meet Rising Demand for Natural Gas
ADNOC Logistics & Services has taken delivery of Al Shelila, the first of six newbuild liquified natural gas (LNG) carriers from the Jiangnan Shipyard in Shanghai, China.
The vessel, delivered two months ahead of schedule, will now be hired out to a top-tier, global energy producer, ADNOC L&S said in a statement. The remaining five carriers are slated for delivery in 2025 and 2026.
Al Shelila, meaning “strength” and “grace” in Arabic, boasts a capacity of some 175,000 square meters, outclassing the company’s existing LNG carriers by 38,000 square meters. The vessel boasts advanced energy-efficient technology including two LNG dual-fuel engines that slash methane emissions by up to 50% compared with older-generation technology.
The contract to build the six carriers was awarded to Jiangnan Shipyard in 2022.
“As we expand our fleet to meet rising global demand for natural gas, our deepening partnership with Jiangnan Shipyard underscores the strong industrial ties between the UAE and China, reinforcing our shared commitment to powering global economic growth,” said Captain Abdulkareem Al Masabi, CEO of ADNOC L&S.
As part of a fleet expansion drive to meet rising demand for natural gas, ADNOC L&S has placed separate orders for up to 23 new energy-efficient vessels, including 8-10 LNG carriers, nine very large ethane carriers (VLECs) and four very large ammonia carriers (VLACs).
Parent company ADNOC, wholly owned by the Emirate of Abu Dhabi, is targeting net zero operations by 2045.
ADNOC L&S will be exhibiting at Breakbulk Middle East on Feb. 10-11 in Dubai.
