Collaboration to Also Explore Green Ammonia Export Opportunities

Abu Dhabi National Oil Co, or ADNOC, and German industrial group thyssenkrupp have teamed up to cooperate on the development of large-scale ammonia cracking, a technique used to extract hydrogen from ammonia.
Under a memorandum of understanding, the companies will work together to develop projects for commercial-scale ammonia cracking plants using thyssenkrupp Uhde technology, which is already in use in more than 130 chemical plants worldwide.
The collaboration will also explore opportunities for the supply and shipment of low-carbon or green ammonia from the UAE to large-scale ammonia cracking facilities worldwide.
As a hydrogen carrier, ammonia is much easier to compress and transport. Once shipped to its destination, the ammonia needs to be decomposed, or “cracked” into hydrogen before use in the energy value chain.
“Countries in Europe, along with many others, are looking to clean hydrogen imports to decarbonize industry and society,” said Cord Landsmann, CEO of thyssenkrupp Uhde. “Clean ammonia is the best way to transport hydrogen by ship, and together with ADNOC, we will deliver the last piece of the puzzle for global clean hydrogen trade at large scale.”
ADNOC is already investing in low-carbon ammonia.
In May 2021, the company announced a 1 million tonne per year low-carbon ammonia production facility at the TA’ZIZ industrial chemicals hub in the city of Al Ruwais in Abu Dhabi.
In early January the company said it had earmarked US$15 billion for decarbonization projects by 2030 including carbon capture, electrification, new CO2 absorption technology and enhanced investments in hydrogen and renewables.
ADNOC will be exhibiting at Breakbulk Middle East 2023, taking place on 13-14 February at the Dubai World Trade Centre.
