Island Jetty Rebuilt to Handle 5,000 Freight Tonnes
Bolloré Logistics has successfully delivered pieces and equipment weighing some 5,000 freight tonnes for a natural gas project on Songo Songo Island off Tanzania’s southeast coast.
The local unit of the France-based transport specialist, hired in 2021 to handle all logistics requirements for the installation of the gas compression plant at the Orca Energy-operated Songo Songo gas fields, used seven barge vessels to ship the cargo to the island, the first time large craft had docked on its shores.
From there, Bolloré employed 130-tonne and 60-tonne cranes, an excavator, a modular hydraulic trailer and two semitrailers to transport the components to the project site.
The company faced several hurdles during the delivery, carried out in intervals between June and September 2021.
A lack of infrastructure meant a new jetty had to be rebuilt and converted into a landing area capable of accommodating the barge vessels, while backfilling was required to ease the flow of vehicles used for loading and unloading.
“The main challenges were the coordination of the customs requirements and the client’s demands, along with a lack of the equipment, including barges and ships,” said Elson Shan, commercial director at Bolloré.
“With our expertise in logistics and industrial projects, we were able to deliver the required solutions with great success. All cargo was lashed and safely secured according to global QHSE standards.”
