60,000 Kilometers of Vertical Drains
Engineering firm Boskalis has secured a provisional contract for the Pasay Reclamation Project in the Philippines.
The large-scale land reclamation project is expected to involve major breakbulk activity as 60,000 kilometers of vertical drains will be installed to create three artificial island, spanning about 360 hectares. The project was awarded by SM Prime Holdings, or SMPHI, one of the largest property developers in Southeast Asia.
“We are delighted with the award of this large contract from SMPHI. As Boskalis, we have a rich tradition in land reclamation and we look forward to contributing to a modest incremental growth of the Philippines and to protect part of Manila against the effects of climate change, said Peter Berdowski, CEO of Boskalis.
Project Duration Five Years
Development will take place in cooperation with China’s CHEC and work on site expected to start within the first quarter of 2020
“The entire reclamation area will be compacted with vibro- and dynamic compaction to ensure soil stability. The outer perimeter of the islands will be protected with a combination of rock revetment and a concrete wave wall,” a spokesperson for Boskalis said.
Preparatory work is set to begin immediately and reclamation activities are expected to be completed within three years and the total project duration including land development is five years.
Record-breaking Transport
Boskalis recently said it has secured heavy marine transport services contracts, valued at about US$120 million, scheduled to take place in 2021 and 2022.
Among these is a contract to transport a FPSO from China to Brazil, exceeding 91,000 tons in weight, the record-breaking transport will be completed using the BOKA Vanguard.
“Boskalis also secured a contract for the transportation of various large LNG modules from a fabrication yard in China to Russia [and] was awarded the contract for the transportation of an FPSO from the fabrication yard in China to the North Sea in 2021 and the transportation of two floating production systems from Singapore to the Gulf of Mexico in the period 2021-2022,” the group said in a statement.
