CB&I has won a contract worth between US$50 million and US$100 million to build 36 storage tanks at Thacker Pass in northern Nevada, the largest known lithium resource and reserve in the U.S.
The contract was awarded by Lithium Nevada, a subsidiary of Lithium Americas Corp.
Under the deal, CB&I will handle the engineering, procurement, fabrication and construction (EPFC) of the flat-bottom atmospheric tanks, which are designed to store chemicals and process solutions used in lithium extraction.
The tanks, designed to meet strict environmental, seismic, and safety requirements, will be built using CB&I’s proprietary field construction methods and state-of-the-art fabrication capabilities, the company said.
Thacker Pass is expected to play a key role in strengthening U.S. supply chains for the battery metal as demand for electric vehicles accelerates.
Bechtel is managing the construction of the facility.
“Thacker Pass will help enable a U.S. supply of lithium and create well-paying jobs during construction and operations. Our team is honored to contribute CB&I’s legacy of tank engineering and construction excellence to this important project,” said Mark Butts, president and CEO of CB&I.
