Collett Transports 50 Turbines for Scottish Wind Project (video)

Cargo Included 68-Tonne Nacelles, 73-Tonne Drive Trains and 63-Tonne Hubs

Collett has completed the delivery of 50 Nordex N133 wind turbines for the South Kyle Wind Farm in southwest Scotland.

In total, some 450 components required to construct the 84-metre hub height turbines were transported by the UK-based hauler, with the Port of Ayr and King George V Dock called on to store and handle the cargo.

The heavier of the components, including the 68-tonne nacelles, 73-tonne drive trains and 63-tonne hubs, arrived at King George V Dock, while the 18-tonne blades and 150 individual tower sections were sent to the Port of Ayr.

“At both ports, each of the components were discharged from the vessel to a precise laydown plan, allowing the Collett team to access each in line with the wind farm’s construction schedule,” the company said.

Travelling under police escort and at night to avoid traffic congestion, the components were carried from the storage locations to the construction site close to the town of Dalmellington using a combination of six, seven and eight-axle trailers, two tower transporter clamp trailers and three super-wing carriers.

Another Collett team were ready at the site to deliver each of the sections to their respective crane pads for a just in time installation service.

“Throughout the entire project, Collett provided a dedicated project management team to successfully handle all aspects of South Kyle Wind Farm, from the initial route surveys to the arrival of the components and through to final delivery,” the company added.

The 240-megawatt South Kyle project, which straddles the counties of East Ayrshire and Dumfries & Galloway, is being built by Vattenfall. It is the Swedish utility’s largest onshore wind farm project in terms of power generation.

The wind farm is slated to start operations later this year. Once online, it will generate enough electricity to meet the demands of some 170,000 homes every year.
