380 Axle Lines Deployed to Shift Hulking Unit in South Korea
Cometto self-propelled modular trailers, or SPMTs, were recently deployed to transport an 18,000-ton floating dock at the Port of Gwangyang in South Korea.
The SPMTs were used to move the hulking, 260-meter-long unit some 300 meters from its installation point at the Sangsangin shipyard to a waiting barge, before its onward journey to Egypt. Heavy-lift specialists Anjeon, DaeMyung and Global supplied their fleet of SPMTs and worked on the project logistics.
A total of 380 axle lines were used, comprising sixty-two, 6-axle and two, 4-axle units, with the entire system driven by 12 power pack units of 335 kW each. The axle lines were deployed in twelve separate convoys supporting four areas under each corner of the floating dock and worked together in an open compound.
“The high payload capacity and the reliable handling of the Cometto modules are decisive advantages for this outstanding job,” said Alberto Di Stefano, sales manager at Cometto.
“Such projects Such projects are realizable thanks to the payload capacity of the Cometto MSPE which reaches a value of up to 70 tons per axle line – the highest amount on the market. Additionally, the patented Cometto dual-link suspension offers an optimized force repartition in the suspension structure. The axle geometry gives the highest possible precision during the load positioning.”
Sangsangin had signed a deal with Suez Canal Authority in late-2021 to build the US$71 million dock, which has a capacity to lift up to 35,000 tons. Construction of the unit took less than a year.
Cometto is a division of heavy equipment manufacturer, Faymonville.
