(Europe-Asia) Development of National Shipbuilding Industry
Dutch shipbuilder Damen has signed a memorandum of understanding with the Ministry of Industry of Bangladesh to create a shipbuilding and ship repair industry in the country.
The landmark deal will see Damen initially construct a shipbuilding and repair facility in Bangladesh to globally recognized environmental and building standards.
“We are very pleased to be participating in this MoU. Damen has a long track record of skills and knowledge transfer of which we are immensely proud. It is our philosophy and practice to help develop the shipbuilding and maritime industries in the countries in which we operate,” said Roland Briene, area director Asia-Pacific of Damen Shipyards Group.
Partnership with Gentium
The firm will partner with Gentium and the Ministry of Industry in Dhaka with a long-term view of serving export markets.
Headquartered in Australia, Gentium Solutions is a global investment and development company with projects spanning multiple industrial sectors.
The signing ceremony in Dhaka was attended by representatives of the Netherlands Embassy in Bangladesh
Knowledge Transfer
Under the terms of the MoU, Gentium and Damen will facilitate technology and knowledge sharing to help train Bangladeshi personnel. This program is expected to significant new training and employment opportunities within the country.
“[Scope of work] includes investing in the establishment of high-quality facilities and equipment and the training of local personnel. Time and again we have witnessed this leading to the establishment of sustainable shipbuilding initiatives able to serve the global marketplace,” Briene explained.
Damen Shipyards Group operates 32 shipbuilding and repair yards worldwide. The firm is headquartered in Nijkerk, in the Netherlands, and employs about 9,000 people globally to deliver about 180 vessels annually.
