Bulkiest Components Measuring Nearly 100 Metres Long Shipped from Kuantan Port
deugro has successfully transported some 280,000 freight tonnes of petrochemical equipment to the Long Son A1 olefins project in southern Vietnam.
The cargo was shipped for client TPSK – a consortium of TechnipFMC and SK Engineering and Construction – from more than 35 seaports and airports around the globe to the construction site on Long Son Island near Vung Tau.
Some 178,000 freight tonnes of the most critical oversized and heavy-lift cargo were transported via 155 breakbulk shipments on 55 chartered vessels. The 24 most challenging components weighing up to 778 tonnes and measuring almost 100 metres long were shipped from Kuantan Port in Malaysia.
A 93-metre C3 tower and its transport beams weighing 800 tonnes was among the largest components ever handled at Kuantan.
The entire project called for 1,400 breakbulk, container and air freight shipments to transport nearly 37,000 packages weighing 68,500 tonnes. All shipments were carried out during widespread and irregular Covid-19 restrictions, deugro said, with soaring freight rates and severely limited vessels and vessel space capacity.
The mammoth move, which also involved deugro’s engineering division dteq and Netherlands-based carrier Roll Group, was overseen by deugro Singapore and supported by 16 deugro country groups. More than 50 deugro experts were in daily contact with the client and subcontractors to handle the complex project.
To keep to the estimated project budget for the client, deugro secured at an early stage the required cargo space and contracted, in collaboration with Roll Group, six semi-submersible multifunctional vessels specialized for heavy lift shipments.
“Drastically increasing COVID-19 cases and the associated restrictions in Malaysia and Vietnam led to repeated and last-minute changes in the schedule. Flexibility, coordination and timely communication of deugro’s project team with the client, the project owner, the supplier and all partners were paramount to keeping the project on track,” said Benjamin Mutti, regional director, deugro Singapore and Malaysia.
“To ensure successful project execution within this challenging scenario, deugro’s project teams proactively provided daily status reports and were in permanent communication with the client, the project owner, local authorities and all partners. The outstanding cooperation between deugro, dteq, Roll Group, the client, the suppliers and Kuantan Port ensured that all difficult OSHL components were delivered safely and successfully on time and on budget.”
