deugro Delivers Critical Cargo for CCU Project in Germany

Large-Scale Facility Is Being Installed at the Lengfurt Cement Plant

deugro has successfully completed the delivery of four heavy storage tanks and a heat exchanger for a carbon capture and utilization (CCU) project at the Lengfurt cement plant in central Germany.

The CCU facility, built by Linde Engineering and Heidelberg Materials, will capture 70,000 tons of CO2 per year and is slated to come online this year. According to Heidelberg, the plant is one of the world’s first large-scale carbon capture facilities for the cement sector.

The transport operation itself involved complex multimodal logistics across multiple countries.

The four tanks, each weighing 75 tons and measuring over 30 meters in length, were transported by coaster vessel from Kayseri, Turkey via the Port of Iskenderun to Antwerp, Belgium, before continuing by barge to a private jetty at Lengfurt. The 180-ton heat exchanger was transported domestically from Haren-Ems, Germany by barge and truck.

Despite the relatively short final stretch – just two kilometers – the on-carriage trucking segment from the Lengfurt river port to the construction site posed the greatest challenge, deugro said. Navigating steep gradients and narrow village roads with 90-degree turns, the components had to be delivered at night under strict local regulations.

The last-mile phase deployed truck-trailer configurations consisting of 16-axle modular trailers with an additional cargo deck extension fitting the length of the components. For the heat exchanger, a second tractor head was mobilized to assist the uphill delivery route.

“Thanks to the excellent and professional cooperation with the client and all partners, all components arrived safely and in time at the construction plant,” said Florian Lumperda, project manager operations at deugro Germany. “We are glad to be contributing our logistics services to this exciting project, enabling the captured carbon from cement production to be utilized as a valuable raw material for further industrial applications.”
