Forwarder Supported Buildout of World’s Largest Green Hydrogen Project

Project cargo specialist deugro plans to channel more of its resources and investment into the green energy sector, pointing to the Middle East as a key region for new projects.
“The whole project market is excited about the energy transition that’s taking place and expected to take place over the next couple of years,” Thomas Wylie, head of global strategic projects and accounts, told Breakbulk on the sidelines of Breakbulk Middle East in Dubai.
“The offshore wind industry is expected to take off globally, for example, and hydrogen projects are popping up all over the world. Then there is a lot of work in the traditional oil and gas sector – ‘greening’ the older plants and revamping them to meet the latest emission standards. All of that is working towards a greener future.”
deugro, which this year celebrates its centenary anniversary, entered the GCC market in Saudi Arabia in June 1982 and has since expanded to the UAE, Bahrain, Oman, and Qatar, operating eight regional offices across the five countries.
In addition to supporting the buildout of several large solar farms across the region, the project forwarder recently completed the transport of a batch of super heavy-lift cargoes for the world’s largest green hydrogen plant, located in Saudi Arabia.
According to Wylie, the project has begun construction and is “actively progressing”.
“It takes a lot of perseverance and focus on such a project because it tends to have a long build up period and the scale is enormous. As deugro, we have been supporting the project for almost three years from the initial engineering stages, supporting in the design and how to transport some of the most critical components, so it is exciting to reach this point now and see all our preparation come to fruition.
“In the early phase, it was all about finding solutions as it’s a world first. Large scale hydrogen projects such as this, as well as other large scale renewable projects, borrow from the methods that have been developed from projects in the traditional oil and gas sector, so the solutions are there, they just need to be adapted and scaled up.”
deugro, a leading expert in project freight forwarding, ocean transportation, transport and marine engineering, and heavy haulage and equipment management, is a regular exhibitor at Breakbulk events. The next event in the calendar is Breakbulk Europe 2024, taking place on 21-23 May at Rotterdam Ahoy.
