Ports on High Alert
Hurricane Dorian continues to inch towards the U.S. eastern seaboard, having devastated the islands of the Bahamas for over a day.
Early Tuesday, the storm began to move northwestward at about 1 mph as it weakened to a Category 3 storm over the Bahamas. Despite the lessening intensity of the hurricane, warnings remain in place for key U.S. ports in the states of Florida, Georgia and North and South Carolina.
“The Captain of the Port for North Carolina set Port Condition X-ray for the Ports of Wilmington and Morehead City as of Tuesday at 4 a.m., due to predicted sustained tropical storm force winds generated by Hurricane Dorian that may arrive within the next 48 hours,” the U.S. Coast Guard said in a statement.
The storm is now forecast to hit North Carolina rather than Florida as it tracks north along the U.S. coast.
