Construction Project Marks Fourth Spending Round for DP World in Brazil
DP World has teamed up with Brazilian railway company Rumo to build a new bulk-handling terminal at the Port of Santos, one of Brazil’s largest private multipurpose port facilities.
The terminal, which will cost an estimated US$500 million to build, will handle some 9 million tons per year of grains and 3.5 million tons of fertilizers. Construction is expected to take 30 months, DP World said.
The facility will be equipped with 21 new pieces of equipment featuring advance technology to limit consumption and emissions of polluting gases.
A 30-year agreement signed between both companies will see DP World providing the terminal area located on the left bank of the port to Rumo while it takes charge of operations and port services.
“We are thrilled to partner with Rumo on this transformative project, which underscores our commitment to driving growth and innovation in Brazil’s logistics sector,” said Fabio Siccherino, CEO of DP World Santos. “This new terminal will not only bolster trade capabilities but also create long-term value for our customers and stakeholders.”
The terminal marks DP World’s fourth investment round in Santos since it began operations in Brazil in 2013.
Some US$35 million was spent last year to upgrade facilities at the port, which included projects to boost container handling capacity from 1.2 million TEUs to 1.4 million TEUs and quay size from 1,100 meters to 1,300 meters.
In 2020, the company launched Brazil’s largest and most modern pulp handling complex at the port, signing a multiyear partnership with global eucalyptus pulp producer Suzano to further expand its cellulose pulp operations.
DP World operates a network of 295 businesses in 78 countries across six continents. Its UAE division operates Jebel Ali Port in Dubai – the Middle East’s busiest shipping destination.
DP World is a sponsor and exhibitor at Breakbulk Europe 2024.
