Integrated FEED for 'World-scale' Petrochemicals Complex
Engineering contractor Wood Group is to develop plans for an onshore petrochemicals facility in southern Oman, following the award of a contract from Duqm Refinery and Petrochemicals Industries Co.
The front-end engineering design contract will progress plans for the site, and include transport logistics for the construction of a “world-scale” steam cracker unit; production facilities for hydrogen, syngas, methanol, and other petrochemicals; and associated utilities.
“This new contract continues our strong track record in delivering robust engineering design services on large, complex capital projects for greenfield developments in the Middle East,” said Dave Stewart, CEO of Wood’s Asset Solutions.
Key Milestone
Located in the Special Economic Zone Area Duqm, or SEZAD, in southern Oman, the proposed facility will be one of the world’s largest petrochemicals sites, and is expected to drive significant breakbulk activity over the next five years.
“This key milestone enables Duqm Refinery to maximize the value of the refinery products and enhance its market competitiveness. This project is our further contribution to the Omani economy and will allow us to deliver against our strategic objective to ensure a sustainable and economic prosperity for both Oman and our shareholders," said Salim Al Huthaili, CEO of DRPIC.
Wood Group expects construction to be completed by the third quarter of 2020 and involve up to 300 people working on the project during the peak delivery phase.
Following its merger with rival Amec Foster Wheeler, Wood Group is one of the largest offshore service providers in the world with about 60,000 staff in more than 50 countries. The group provides breakbulk transport services alongside engineering, production support and maintenance management for the energy and industrial sectors worldwide.
New Products Drive Downstream Growth
Led by Oman Oil Co. and Kuwait Petroleum International, the project will be centred around a mixed-feed steam cracker with a capacity of 1,600 KTPA ethylene processing.
The project aims to produce new products for the first time in Oman, including ethylene glycols, oxo chemicals, butadiene and increase the diversity of the existing petrochemical portfolio in Oman.
“The diverse DPP products provide building blocks for a vast variety of value-added products, which in turn provide a foundation for downstream industries/projects within SEZAD, Oman and beyond, offering the potential to attract foreign direct investment and support domestic growth,” a spokesperson for DRPIC said.
This latest development follows the award of a separate contract to Wood Group in 2018 for provision of two Terrace Wall double-fired delayed coker heaters at Duqm Refinery. DRPIC reports that work is progressing steadily across three EPC packages with project progress estimated at nearly 20 percent complete.
