G2 Ocean Beefs Up Open-Hatch Fleet

Ammonia-Ready Vessels “Ideally Suited” for Long-Haul Pulp Trades

G2 Ocean is beefing up its ship numbers with up to four ammonia-ready open-hatch vessels, as the Norway-based multipurpose carrier doubles down on its long-term fleet decarbonization strategy.

The 82,300 deadweight-tonne vessels have been ordered by G2 Ocean shareholder Grieg Maritime Group and will be built by the Huangpu Wenchong Shipyard, a subsidiary of the China State Shipbuilding Corporation.

The order is for an initial two ships, with an option for a further two.

Each ship is equipped with a MAN B&W 5S60ME engine and prepared for tanks holding 3,000 cubic metres of ammonia on deck. According to the carrier, the vessels are ideally suited for long-haul pulp trades with eight holds and four electro-hydraulic jib cranes with an individual capacity of 75 tonnes.

Delivery of the four units is slated for 2026.

“We look forward to welcoming the vessels to our fleet. They will be a valuable addition to G2 Ocean and will contribute to strengthening our service offerings,” said CEO Arthur English.

“The investment made by Grieg represents a bold step forward in their commitment to G2 Ocean, our customers and the environment. Thanks to the support of our shareholders the ‘core’ fleet will continue to provide high-quality shipping services to our customers, while also contributing to a more sustainable future.”

G2 Ocean is looking to cut its greenhouse gas emissions per transported unit by a minimum of 40 percent by 2030 compared to 2008 levels and become a net-zero emissions company by 2050.

According to the carrier, the new vessels are an important step forward in achieving its goals of reducing its carbon footprint and providing customers with more sustainable shipping solutions.

“At G2 Ocean, we acknowledge, due to the nature of our business, that we have an important role to play in lowering emissions. The new vessels will help us to reduce our environmental impact in the areas in which we operate and is a step in the direction for us to achieve our ultimate emissions goal of net zero,” Arthur said.

G2 Ocean is the world’s largest shipping firm within the open-hatch segment. Its fleet comprises some 126 open-hatch and conventional bulk vessels between 23,500 and 73,000 deadweight tonnes.

G2 Ocean will be exhibiting at Breakbulk Americas 2023, taking place on 26-28 September at the George R. Brown Convention Centre in Houston, Texas.
