Ho Chi Minh Base to Support Offshore Wind Energy Projects
GAC has paired up with SME Logistics Holding to launch its first office in Vietnam, as the Dubai-based project cargo specialist seeks to strengthen its presence in Southeast Asia and the Asia-Pacific region.
The new base in Ho Chi Minh City will provide shipping, logistics and marine services to customers at ports located along the Saigon River that are active in sectors such as dry and liquid bulk, liners, fast moving consumer goods and offshore energy.
SME Logistics is a Hanoi-headquartered project forwarder and shipping agency operational throughout Vietnam and Indochina.
“We have been active in Vietnam for many years through our work with local partners and agents, but the time is now right to set up our own operational office in Vietnam,” said Daniel Nordberg, GAC’s group vice president, Asia Pacific and Indian Subcontinent. “The combination of GAC’s global network with the strong local presence and know-how of SME Logistics will mark a new chapter for us to better serve our customers and deliver their strategy.”
According to GAC, the new office will help support exploration, production and maintenance operations for Vietnam’s nascent offshore wind sector. More than 120 offshore wind projects are in the pipeline as the country targets net zero by 2050, GAC said.
“The push for renewables is a key focus for GAC,” said Erland Ebbersten, group vice president for marine and energy. “We are now leveraging our decades-long expertise in offshore development projects, including offshore wind ones, to ramp up support for renewables projects and are set to play a critical part in Vietnam’s journey to net-zero.”
Established in 1956, the privately-owned group employs over 7,500 people in more than 50 countries worldwide. In January, Pontus Fredriksson took over as GAC’s new group president after predecessor Bengt Ekstrand assumed the role of executive co-chairman.
GAC is an exhibitor at Breakbulk Middle East.
