(Europe) 136.6 Million Tons Throughput Reported
Authorities at the Port of Hamburg have reported growth in seaborne cargo despite a "slowdown in worldwide trade" and global trade sanctions.
The port posted seaborne cargo throughput of 136.6 million tons, a 1.1 percent year-on-year.Authorities also announced double-digit growth in seaport-hinterland rail transport.
“The Port of Hamburg is not only one of Europe’s top logistics hubs, but also powers jobs in Hamburg and a much larger area,” said Sen. Michael Westhagemann, adding that "major projects" such as the upgrade of the Rethe and Kattwyk bridges were creating “vital assets for our port customers all over the world.”
The port is Germany’s largest universal port and Europe’s leading rail port. It is part of the country’s largest continuous industrial area and currently ranks the U.S. as its second-strongest market after China.
