Drewry Reports Widespread Unease and Uncertainty
Maritime research agency Drewry has launched a IMO 2020 Cost Impact Calculator, designed to help breakbulk shippers analyze the various costs likely to impact their business.
The IMO’s new sulfur limits are to come into force in January 2020, and are expected to drive significant costs as shipping lines will either have to use cleaner, more expensive fuel or invest in “scrubbers” on their ships.
“With the compliance window to the IMO’s low-sulphur rule change in January 2020 rapidly closing, our analysis of the topic has highlighted widespread unease and uncertainty among shippers,” said Philip Damas, head of Drewry Supply Chain Advisors.
The agency reports that four out of five respondents hadn’t received clarity from their carriers as to how additional fuel costs will be covered. The Cost Impact Calculator is available via Drewry's site.
