Customized Fleet to Support Expansion of Offshore Nacelle Plant in Taiwan
Finland’s Konecranes has secured an order to supply four electrical overhead cranes to Siemens Gamesa’s offshore wind nacelle plant in Taichung, Taiwan.
The customised cranes with lifting capacities of up to 400 tonnes will support the entire material handling of the plant’s expanded production scope, and will be deployed to lift various turbine parts to and from the nacelle production lines, Konecranes said.
Installation is slated for the first quarter in 2024.
“Our cranes are known especially for their precision and durability, two characteristics that are critical in assembling nacelles given both the size and the complexity of the components involved,” said Christoph Chang, area manager for Konecranes. “We look forward to further supporting Siemens Gamesa’s renewable energy ambitions in the future.”
Siemens Games announced last September plans to triple the size of its offshore nacelle manufacturing facility at Taichung to some 90,000 square metres. The new factory will boast dedicated production lines for hub assembly, nacelle backend assembly and final nacelle assembly including generator-related work.
The facility will deliver locally-made nacelles for the 1,044-MW Hai Long offshore wind project, future projects from Taiwan’s round 3 offshore wind power auctions and other projects in the Asia-Pacific region, Siemens Gamesa said.
The company, part of Siemens Energy, is looking to make Taiwan an offshore wind power hub for the fast-growing Asia-Pacific region.
“We selected Konecranes once again based on our positive experience from previous projects both in EMEA and APAC,” said Joakim Videbaek Nielsen, project manager at Siemens Gamesa. “Konecranes is a trusted partner who makes specifically engineered, durable products that allow us to leverage our facilities to the maximum.”
Konecranes is headquartered in Hyvinkää, some 50 kilometres north of Helsinki.
Konecranes and Siemens Gamesa are members of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network, a worldwide networking platform for shippers involved in the engineering, manufacturing and production of project cargo. Members will get the opportunity to meet in person in the BGSN Lounge at Breakbulk Europe 2023 in Rotterdam.
