Kuehne+Nagel Kicks Off Mammoth NEOM Project

Some 190 Wind Turbine Generators to be Shipped to Saudi’s Red Sea Coast

Kuehne+Nagel has secured a contract to transport 190 wind turbine generators and 67 tower sets to Saudi Arabia’s US$500 billion NEOM development on the Red Sea coast.

The project for Chinese renewable energy group Envision Energy is expected to be completed in 2025. A spokesperson for Kuehne+Nagel told Breakbulk that deliveries had already begun, and that the equipment was arriving at the Port of NEOM in Oxagon.

More than 100 project logistics professionals, vessel chartering experts, transport engineers, drivers and riggers have been deployed to manage cargo movements, while a dedicated office has been set up in the city of Tabuk to coordinate teams at the port and wind farm site.

The components weighing a combined 1.4 million freight tons will be used to install a 1.67-GW wind farm being built to supply clean power to the world’s largest green hydrogen project – a 650-ton-per-day facility developed by NEON Green Hydrogen Company.

NGHC is a joint venture between ACWA Power, Air Products and NEOM.

Air Products awarded Envision a contract to supply the turbines in June.

“This is a major milestone in Kuehne+Nagel’s Roadmap 2026, our new strategy that we presented in March this year. We see great potential in providing solutions for renewable energy customers and the NEOM project is a testament to our logistics expertise in this high-growth field that supports the global energy transition,” said Stefan Paul, CEO of Kuehne+Nagel International AG.

NEOM, in northwestern Tabuk Province, is one of several so-called “giga projects” that Saudi Arabia is developing as part of its Vision 2030 plan to pivot the economy away from oil and gas towards more sustainable, private sector-driven industries.

The 26,500-square-kilometre business and logistics zone will house ports, industrial plants, sports stadiums, green energy facilities and a hi-tech, 170-kilometre-long smart city dubbed The Line.

Payne Fischer, Kuehne+Nagel’s regional head of industrial projects for North America, is scheduled to appear as one of the speakers on the main stage panel session “Progress in the Digitalization of the Breakbulk Sector” at Breakbulk Americas 2023.

Check out the full main stage agenda for this year’s event, taking place on 26-28 September in Houston.

Air Products and NEOM are members of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network.
