Mammoet JV Handling Jackets for Taiwan Offshore Wind Project

Powerful SK 350 Ring Crane to be Deployed to Marshall 2,500-Ton Components

Mammoet-Giant, a joint venture between Mammoet and Taiwan’s Giant Heavy Machinery Services, has been selected to handle 66 suction bucket jackets for the 920-megawatt, or MW, Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms in Taiwan.

To carry out the marshalling and lifting activities of the 2,500-ton components, Mammoet will deploy its SK 350 ring crane to lift the units directly from deck carriers to the quayside. After temporary storage on site, the jackets will be lifted onto the carriers for ferrying to the installation vessel in the field.

The procedure will remove the need for vessel repositioning during offloading and loading operations, Mammoet said. The SK 350’s ability to operate in high wind speeds will mitigate risks and optimize loading speeds, thus keeping vessel turnaround times and costs to a minimum.

“We are thrilled and honored to have been awarded the contract to help construct Greater Changhua 2b and 4 offshore wind farms. Mammoet-Giant remains steadfast in our mission to deliver exceptional performance and contribute to the sustainable growth of Taiwan's renewable energy sector,” said Chris Schraa, managing director of Mammoet Taiwan.

“Projects like these showcase the strength of our setup in Taiwan as well as the value of early engagement in engineering. This enables us to offer smarter and safer solutions, optimizing schedules and processes through direct communication with the developer.”

The Greater Changhua 2b and 4 wind farms, located 35-60 kilometers off the coast of Changhua County, are being developed by Danish renewables company Orsted. Construction work is slated for completion by the end of 2025.

Orsted is also developing the 900-MW Greater Changhua 1 and 2a offshore wind farms, Taiwan’s first large-scale offshore wind venture. Orsted expects to commission the project’s final wind turbine this year.

Taiwan is targeting 5.7 gigawatts, or GW, of offshore wind power capacity by 2025.

Mammoet USA will be exhibiting at Breakbulk Americas 2023, taking place on 26-28 September at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.
