First Phase Online in Q3 2019
Authorities at the Port of Savannah said that its Mason Mega Rail project has reached 25 percent complete.
The ambitious expansion project is set to double the port’s rail lift capacity to 1 million containers per year, with the first phase due to come online by October 2019, and the second phase operational by the end of 2020.
"Our rail expansion will allow Garden City Terminal to accommodate additional 10,000-foot long unit trains and provide direct rail service to inland markets such as St. Louis, Chicago and Cincinnati. By stepping up to the plate to bring on additional rail capacity, we are expanding the size and scope of Georgia's market reach," said Jimmy Allgood, chairman of the Georgia Ports Authority board.
The project comes alongside wide-ranging expansion plans by the GPA to expand capcity across its assets. The GPA operates Georgia’s primary deepwater ports of Savannah and Brunswick, as well as inland barge operations in Bainbridge and Columbus.
