Volumes Up at Port of Savannah
Authorities at the Port of Savannah said that intermodal cargo volumes at the port are up 10.5 percent, as the Mason Mega Rail project approaches completion.
The Georgia Ports Authority posted the latest cargo figures for July, as it reported more than 507,000 intermodal lifts for the fiscal year that ended in June. The Mason project is now 40 percent complete with Phase II due to open in 2020.
"Savannah will have the largest on-dock intermodal rail facility of any port in North America. With an enhanced capability for 10,000-foot long trains on terminal, Mega Rail will slash up to 24 hours from our delivery times by enabling direct service to destinations across the Midwest,” said Will McKnight, GPA board chairman.
The Mason project comes alongside wide-ranging expansion plans by the GPA to expand capacity across its assets. GPA operates Georgia’s primary deepwater ports of Savannah and Brunswick, as well as inland barge operations in Bainbridge and Columbus.
