Japanese Carrier Plans to Launch 90 LNG-Fuelled Vessels By 2030
Mitsui OSK Lines has ordered four more 7,000-unit capacity car carriers, as the Japanese operator presses ahead with plans to launch 90 liquified natural gas-fuelled vessels by 2030.
MOL said it had struck a deal with compatriots Nihon Shipyard and Shin Kurushima Dockyard to build the four carriers, with delivery expected in succession between 2024 and 2025. The carrier’s first batch of four LNG-fuelled car carriers were ordered last year, with delivery slated for 2024.
According to MOL, compared with conventional marine fuel oil, LNG could cut carbon emissions by about 20 to 25 percent and sulphur dioxide by 100 percent. MOL is targeting net zero greenhouse gas emissions by 2050.
“MOL continues to accelerate its initiatives on adoption of clean alternative fuels for vessels including the building of additional LNG-fuelled car carriers, other LNG-fuelled vessel projects in which the MOL Group has engaged, biofuel and research on the use of ammonia, and is committed to reducing its GHG emissions,” the operator said.
MOL’s target fleet of 90 LNG-fuelled vessels by 2030 also includes large bulk carriers, tugs and ferries.
