Northland, Kepco Partner on Offshore Wind

Canadian wind power specialist Northland Power has singed an agreement with Kepco E&C to work jointly on the development of offshore wind projects in South Korea.

The two firms signed a memorandum of understanding that will see joint participation in local offshore wind projects, alongside investment in overseas project and development of floating offshore wind farms.

“We look forward to working together to support the development of a robust Korean offshore wind industry,” a spokesperson for Northland Power said.

The south Korean Ministry of Trade, Industry and Energy unveiled ambitious plans earlier this year to expand capacity and drive breakbulk demand in the country’s offshore wind sector.

 

South Korea Targets 16.5 GW of Wind Power

South Korea has a target to produce 20 percent of domestic electricity from renewable energy by 203 and forecasts an expansion of renewables of 48.7 gigawatts, which will include 16.5 gigawatts of wind energy.

Northland and Kepco will now cooperate on long-term exchange of offshore wind-related information and data, licensing and technical support, to support the joint development of projects.

South Korean president Moon Jae-in recently announced plans for a 4-gigawatt solar-offshore wind complex built on reclaimed land area in Saemangeum, Gunsan.

 

Denmark, South Korea Deal

Authorities in South Korea further bolstered the case for offshore wind development in the country via a knowledge-sharing exercise between the Korean National Assembly and the Danish Energy Agency.

Parliamentarians from the National Assembly, sought to deepen the understanding of the Danish regulatory framework with a view to promoting public acceptance and offshore wind auctions.

The two countries entered a bilateral renewable energy cooperation agreement at the start of this month focused on development of offshore wind capacity.
