(Americas) Support for Industry Recovery
Authorities at the Panama Canal have extended temporary relief measures until the end of 2020 in a bid to support industry recovery.
Breakbulk shipping line traversing the canal can continue to take advantage of suspension of advance payments for transit reservation fees and a streamlined reservation system. The changes were originally Implemented in early May and were to end at the start of September.
“Despite the challenges faced earlier this year, I am confident we will see a steady recovery going into our 2021 fiscal year for both the canal and its customers,” said Ricaurte Vásquez Morales, Panama Canal administrator.
The authority reports that a recovery in demand has supported growth in the second half as the number of transits rose from 845 in June to 933 in July.
