Well Hook-Ups, Pipelines and Tie-Ins To Be Delivered for Bahrain Field Development
Energy engineering services provider Petrofac has been awarded a multi-million-dollar, two-year contract by Bahrain’s Bapco Upstream.
Petrofac said the contract would enable it to support Bapco Upstream’s production plans through the delivery of well hook-ups, associated pipelines and tie-ins for several new wells within the onshore Bahrain Field.
Bapco Upstream is a wholly owned subsidiary of Bahrain’s state-owned Bapco Energies. The company manages the Bahrain Field and oversees all upstream operations across the Gulf state, with a focus on oil and gas exploration, field development, production and distribution.
“Having delivered multiple projects for Bapco Upstream over the past decade, this award recognizes our engineering and project execution capability,” Tareq Kawash, group CEO of Petrofac. “Our strong relationships with the local supply chain have ensured the safe and timely delivery of scopes, maintaining the highest standards of quality. We look forward to continuing these partnerships to deliver this critical infrastructure, which underpins the supply of energy to Bahrain.”
In a similar fashion to other Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) members, Bahrain has launched a long-term economic strategy, dubbed Vision 2030, to pivot its economy away from oil, targeting instead sectors such as green energy, manufacturing, tourism and transport. The country is aiming to reach net zero emissions by 2060.
Despite ambitious goals, hydrocarbons remain a crucial sector for Bahrain, with crude oil exports making up about 70 percent of total government revenue. Production is sourced from the Bahrain Field and Abu Safah, an offshore reservoir shared with Saudi Aramco.
A massive offshore oilfield discovered in early 2018 off Bahrain’s west coast could further boost its export muscle and hand project logistics with a long-term source of cargo-carrying contracts. The reservoir holds an estimated 80 billion barrels of shale oil, outstripping the kingdom’s current proven reserves of just 125 million barrels.
