Port of Rotterdam Building New Site at Maasvlakte 2

Constructor Boskalis Also Building Two Sand Dams to Store Dredged Material

The Port of Rotterdam Authority has inked a contract with marine engineer Boskalis for the construction of some 40 hectares of new land in the northwest corner of Prinses Alexiahaven at the port’s Maasvlakte 2 industrial zone.

The site is slated for completion by the end of this year.

Boskalis has also been charged with building two sand dams. Sand released behind these dams from the deepening of port basins in the coming years will be deposited and reused to create new land in an efficient way.

Work to deepen the Prinses Amaliahaven would begin soon, the port said, and would be carried out by a consortium of HOCHTIEF, Ballast Nedam and Van Oord. Good sand from the project will be used in the Prinses Alexiahaven to build new sites, while dredged up material unsuitable for construction work will be shipped to sea.

“Due to the energy transition, sites in the port area are in high demand,” the port said. “However, the number of available sites in the existing port area is becoming scarce, which is why the port authority is now starting to build new sites on Maasvlakte 2. Concrete interest has already been shown in these sites.”

According to the port, the construction of new sites always precedes the installation of businesses by several years, with the sites requiring time to settle. New roads and other types of infrastructure such as utilities and transmission lines must also be installed.

The port of Rotterdam will be host port for Breakbulk Europe 2024, taking place at on 21-23 May at Rotterdam Ahoy.
