Projects Electrify Red Hook Terminals

Implements Electric Fleet, Octopi By Navis TOS

Like Bob Dylan decades ago went electric, so too are Red Hook Terminals and the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey.

The port and tenants and state agencies and organizations are sharing in more than US$100 million in funding for green transportation projects to reduce carbon emissions, improve air quality and reducing the impact of climate change.

About US$36 million of funding has been dedicated to the electrification of cargo handling and medium- and heavy-duty machinery in port and industrial areas.

For Red Hook Terminals, this meant adding a fleet of 10 BYD 8Y all-electric yard trackers, from local dealer Hudson County Motors. The zero-emission fleet has been deployed at Red Hook’s intermodal yard in Port Newark, New Jersey, and is the largest fleet of heavy-duty electric trucks operating on the U.S. East Coast.

“It’s our duty as good neighbors to help reduce emissions in the communities we work in,” said Michael Stamatis, president of Red Hook Terminals, when the company placed the order for the electric trucks.

The funds came from the state’s involvement in the Regional Greenhouse Gas Initiative and from a pollution mitigation settlement with automaker Volkswagen.
New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy created the Office of Climate Action and the Green Economy, which formed the New Jersey Council on the Green Economy.

Red Hook Armed with Octopi By Navis

Another project Red Hook Terminals has implemented in 2021 is subscribing for Octopi by Navis, a cloud-based terminal operation system, or TOS, for its Newark and Brooklyn, New York, locations.

Octopi is part of Navis and Cargotec Corp., providers of operational technologies and services that improve performance and efficiency for the global shipping industry.

Red Hook Terminals said it chose Octopi because it is helping its business become more dynamic and remain competitive in the industry.

“We will be able to easily transition to a more modern and comprehensive system, which will upgrade our offerings to benefit our business and customers,” said Tom Griffith, executive vice president of Red Hook Terminals, when it initially reached agreement with Navis. “Octopi’s functionality and utilization of real-time data will give us the tools and critical insights into our operation that will allow us to improve productivity and efficiency at our terminals.”

Reached recently, Griffith said the TOS have been initiated and has been going smoothly.

Martin Bardi, vice president of global sales for Octopi by Navis, said the TOS provides “a more affordable and nimble solution to help terminals reach their full business potential with enterprise-level functionality. We are thrilled to partner with Red Hook Terminals … to optimize their operations and better serve their customers in the region.”

Navis is a provider of operational technologies and services that unlock greater performance and efficiency across the cargo supply chain, combining industry best practices with innovative technology and enables customers, regardless of cargo type, to maximize performance and reduce risk.
