New Facility on Greenwood Island
Offshore engineering specialist Saipem is to establish a new spool-base in Pascagoula, Mississippi, on the U.S. Gulf of Mexico.
The proposed facility will act as a major new breakbulk hub for transport and storage of pipe sections prior to reeling onboard pipelay vessels. The base will be operated under a long-term agreement in a dedicated area of ST Engineering Halter Marine & Offshore facilities on Greenwood Island.
“The spool-base supports Saipem’s growth in the deepwater field development sector as well as consolidating the importance of our activities in the Gulf of Mexico area, with a locally-based approach and resident assets,” said Giorgio Martelli, CEO of Saipem America.
Complex Projects
Equipped with advanced welding machines, non-destructive testing facilities, and field joint coating systems, the spool-based will also be structured to deal with complex projects such as pipe-in-pipe and HDPE liners.
“The Saipem spool-base will be a highly specialized site designed to provide support for vessels performing pipelay activities for offshore oil and gas development projects,” a spokesperson for Saipem said.
The facility will also leverage the ability of the Saipem Constellation to lift fully loaded reels onboard, as well as stalking pipes into long strings and spooling of stalks onto reels, optimizing vessel and installation schedules.
Positive H1 results
Proposals for the new base follow positive first-half results for Saipem, which announced a return to profitability, with a net profit of €14 million, indicating a strong improvement compared to the first half of 2018.
Headquartered in Italy, Saipem provides onshore and offshore breakbulk transport, drilling services, engineering and installation of pipelines and complex projects worldwide. The firm announced award of new contracts, equal to €9.5 billion as at June 30, 2019.
“Focus on innovation has allowed us to acquire contracts thanks to our offers of technological solutions, which respect the environment and strive to limit their carbon footprint. The ability to operate in new territories and communities that are less used to an industrial presence will facilitate our operations in Mozambique, a strategic area for the equilibrium of the African continent, and in east-west relations, where we have recently acquired the most economically significant contract in our history,” said Stefano Cao, Saipem CEO.
