Silk Way Launches Budapest-Baku Service
Cargo carrier Silk Way West Airlines has introduced a service connecting Budapest with the Azerbaijani capital, Baku.
The new route will operate twice weekly and will be served by Boeing 747 freighters flying direct from Liszt Ferenc International Airport to Baku. The service is expected to drive additional traffic for the Hungarian hub, with Azerbaijani oil projects driving breakbulk demand.
“We have recognized an increasing demand for scheduled services to and from Eastern Europe … In the spirit of the ancient silk road, we want to facilitate this growth by providing regular shipping opportunities to Central Europe as well as into the booming Middle Eastern and Asian markets with the establishment of this connection” said Wolfgang Meier, CEO at Silk Way West Airlines.
Budapest Airport has signed a number of new cooperation agreements recently as it aims to strengthen its position as a regional breakbulk hub and will also open a 20,000-square-meter dedicated freight center, called Cargo City in the second quarter of 2019.
