Swire Projects Ships Turbines for New Zealand Wind Project

Ten Units Were Transported in Single Shipment Using Newly Chartered Pacific Humility

Swire Projects has deployed its newly chartered multipurpose vessel, Pacific Humility, to transport a complete set of wind turbines in a single shipment from China to the New Zealand seaport of Bluff.

The 10 V136 Vestas turbines were destined for the first stage of the Kaiwera Downs wind farm being built close to the city of Gore on New Zealand’s South Island. The first stage will have a capacity of 43 megawatts, or MW, and is slated to start operations by year-end, according to project developer Mercury.

Future phases could call for the installation of up to 83 turbines with a capacity of 240 MW.

“We are proud to have played a key role in this significant milestone project for the renewable energy industry in New Zealand and to deliver the full set of wind turbines on time and with the highest standards of safety and quality,” said Namir Khanbabi, general manager at Swire Projects.

Pacific Humility is one of three H-Class vessels secured by Swire Projects last year on long-term charter deals. The 28,500-dwt ships boast three cranes with a combined lifting capacity of up to 150 tons and are designed to carry a wide range of project cargo.

The “African class” vessels were built in 2010 and 2011 at China’s Huanghai Shipyard. The other two ships in the series have been renamed Pacific Honor and Pacific Hero.

Swire Projects is the projects and heavy-lift shipping arm of Singapore-based Swire Shipping. The company, which operates a fleet of MPVs, was established in October 2020 to provide specialist shipping services to the energy, renewable and infrastructure sectors.

Swire Projects is exhibiting at Breakbulk Americas 2023, taking place on 26-28 September at the George R. Brown Convention Centre in Houston, Texas. Register for the event here.
