Technip, Enerkem Ink Biofuels and Circular Chemicals Deal

BGSN Members to Fast Track Deployment of Green Fuels Technology

Technip Energies and Enerkem have joined forces to fast track the implementation of waste-to-biofuels and circular chemicals technology.

According to a memorandum of understanding, the two companies, members of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network, would work together to accelerate the deployment of Enerkem’s gasification technology to transform non-recyclable waste into biofuels, low-carbon fuels and circular chemicals for hard-to-abate sectors.

As part of the deal, Enerkem has launched a development company, or DevCo, to acquire sites and secure relevant permits for the replicable methanol biorefinery design, supporting the production of bio and low-carbon fuels and circular chemicals.

“We are excited to partner with Technip Energies to accelerate the deployment of Enerkem’s technology in Europe, North America, and the Middle East,” said Dominic Boies, CEO at Enerkem. “Technip Energies’ extensive expertise will enable Enerkem’s clients to benefit from projects speed to market and cost efficiencies, supporting their decarbonization efforts and sustainability goals.”

Montreal-headquartered Enerkem boasts various projects worldwide, including the world’s first commercial-scale biorefinery producing advanced bio-methanol and circular methanol from non-recyclable waste in Alberta, Canada.

A large-scale facility based on Enerkem’s waste-to-methanol platform is also under construction in Quebec, with operations slated to start in 2025.

Energy services company Technip Energies focusing on liquified natural gas, or LNG, hydrogen and ethylene as well as growing market positions in blue and green hydrogen, sustainable chemistry and CO management.

The Breakbulk Global Shipper Network is an extensive networking platform for executives operating at the top end of the project supply chain in sectors such as oil and gas, energy and renewables, mining and minerals, construction, forestry, industrial manufacturing and aerospace.

The next in-person meet-up for BGSN members will be at Breakbulk Americas 2023, taking place on 26-28 September at the George R. Brown Convention Center in Houston, Texas.
