Rovuma LNG Complex to Provide Project Cargo With Massive Opportunities
Technip Energies and JGC have secured the front-end engineering design (FEED) contract for the Rovuma liquified natural gas (LNG) project at Palma in northeast Mozambique.
The contract was awarded by ExxonMobil on behalf of Mozambique Rovuma Venture (MRV), a joint venture between the U.S. energy producer, Eni and China National Petroleum Corporation (CNPC).
The Rovuma LNG project calls for the construction of an export-oriented LNG complex comprising 12 fully modularized LNG trains each with a production capacity of 1.5 million tons per year. The 18-million-ton-per-year (MTPA) plant, slated to reach final investment decision (FID) by year-end, will process natural gas produced at Mozambique’s offshore Rovuma Basin.
“By leveraging our expertise in modularization and electrified LNG, we are committed to support ExxonMobil and its partners towards final investment decision, as well as strengthening our presence in Mozambique to contribute to long-term economic growth and its ambition to become one of Africa’s leading LNG exporters,” said Mario Tommaselli, senior vice president of gas and low carbon energies at Technip Energies.
Africa’s surging demand for energy, driven by a focus on economic growth, is fueling expansion in the oil and gas sector and providing breakbulk and project cargo with a slew of new cargo-carrying opportunities.
A number of large-scale LNG projects are slated to start up in the coming years in Mozambique alone, including TotalEnergies’ Mozambique LNG project. The complex will feature two liquefaction units with an initial capacity of 13 MTPA, with the potential to expand to 43 MTPA.
Paul Eardley-Taylor, head of oil and gas for Southern Africa at Standard Bank, previously told Breakbulk that he expected Mozambique to rank among the world’s top five LNG-producing nations within the next few years.
Technip Energies, JGC, ExxonMobil, Eni and TotalEnergies are members of the Breakbulk Global Shipper Network, a worldwide network of companies and executives involved in the engineering, manufacturing and production of project cargo.
The next in-person meet-up for BGSN members will be at Breakbulk Americas on Oct. 15-17 in Houston.
