(Europe) Rotterdam Refuelling Operation Hailed as Milestone
Energy firm Total has completed a record bunkering operation at the Port of Rotterdam, refuelling the world’s largest liquefied natural gas-powered container ship.
The world first involved the transfer of about 17,300 cubic meters of LNG from the world’s largest LNG bunker vessel, the Gas Agility, to the CMA CGM container vessel Jacques Saade. The bunkering operation was seen as an important step in the transition to low-emission fuels for the global shipping fleet.
“The success of the first LNG bunkering of our flagship in Rotterdam is the culmination of 7 years of research and development … This operation marks the structuring of a chain of excellence for LNG used as a fuel for maritime transport. It is a new step towards accelerating the energy transition in maritime transport and logistics,” said Christine Cabau, executive vice president at CMA CGM Group.
Headquartered in Marseille, France, CMA CGM is the world's fourth-largest container-shipping line, and operates a dedicated project cargo division covering 420 ports.
